Hi.
I like to read books with a highlighter and a pen. Now I get to read my internet pretty much the same way.

How cool is that?

In other words, a little humility and contrition are probably the better route.

Majora Carter
Position: President of the green-collar economic consulting company, the Majora Carter Group, LLC
Hometown: South Bronx, NY
Education: Bronx High School of Science, Wesleyan University (BA), New York University (MFA)
BE A REMARKABLE WOMAN!
Contact your elected officials in support of green collar economic development in your community. While the term “green-collar jobs” gains more press and pundits daily, few have actually marshaled the resources to get unemployed Americans trained and placed on pathways out of poverty in this growing economic sector. Majora Carter has. Born, raised, and currently living in the South Bronx, Majora founded Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx) in 2001 to improve the economic quality of the environmentally challenged neighborhood. In 2003, she launched the highly successful Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training program. B.E.S.T. places a skilled green-collar workforce in growth sectors based on climate-adaptation trends in the job market. Successful graduates develop a personal and economic stake in their urban environment. SSBx also spearheaded city and state legislation that fuels demand for these jobs while improving public health, and reducing energy consumption. Majora is now president of the Majora Carter Group, LLC, a green collar economic consulting firm with clients across the country and around the world. She is a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, one of Newsweek’s “25 To Watch” and one of Essence Magazine’s “25 most Influential African Americans.” Majora serves on the boards of Ceres, SJF, and the Wilderness Society. She is also the host of Sundance Channel’s Eco-Heroes and National Public Radio’s The Promised Land.

But such apparently diverse problems with relatively simple interventions lead to broad impact: social cohesion, sense of security, new job opportunities and starting a movement … and above all hope and energy to invest in their own community.

So here’s an opportunity for design to ignite change: Focus on small public providers, each with their own saint at the top, and make story, real story, the portal for the public on the national health care issue, converting what has always been a top-down issue to one of bottom-up.

As anyone who saw Twilight: Ballad Of The Melodramatic Papercut this weekend can attest, CGI Huskies are totally the new Abstinence Vampires, breathing near each others’ faces is the new kissing, and no character development is the new character development.

Other speakers like Baratunde Thurston, who rocked his keynote about Hashtags, disagreed. “You can’t have a divided experience where the speaker is in one world and the audience is in another. But the larger point is that people have come to think there is an intrinsic right to heckling. What happened to actually listening to the speaker at a conference? In this new age where everyone demands to be heard, I fear that we are losing respect for the art of listening.

Uch, this song is the best, and I’m not just saying that because I want Gaga and Lambert to have a baby who I will then hold above my head on the top of a mountain like Simba in The Lion King while 500,000 gay men weep beneath me. What? Yes. (via Adam Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment” Is Your New “Clubbing in Space” Soundtrack | Best Week Ever
